The Akan people live primarily in present-day Ghana and in other parts of West Africa countries like Ivory Coast and Togo. It is believed that Akan people migrated from the Sahara desert and Sahel regions of Africa into current location in the 11th century.
The Akan language forms a important component of Akan culture. From the 15th century to the 19th century, the Akan people dominated gold mining and trading in the region. This wealth in gold attracted European traders.
